Calling Custom APIs from Smartsheet form
Hi All, we have a simply custom API which will take as input an employees ID and return their management chain. We would like to call this API as part of a simple smartsheet form we built such that their supervisor's ID can be inserted as part of the record in the smartsheet. Are there instructions as to how to embed a custom API into a smartsheet form?
Thanks

I can think of 2 options right off. You could create a separate form for each supervisor and use a hidden, pre-populated field for the supervisors name.
The other option would be to create a table of each employee with their supervisor's ID in the column to the right. You could then use a VLOOKUP or an INDEX/MATCH statement in the sheet the form populates to automatically pull in the supervisor's ID. Once the formula is entered into a row, it will auto-fill into the new rows created immediately below it.

Thanks Paul. So it sounds like a person is unable to call a custom API from a form?

To be perfectly honest... I don't really know what an API is exactly.
I was just hoping that if you were NOT able to accomplish exactly what you wanted, a little bit of workaround might help. My apologies.
I will do a little digging though to see if I can't find some info on API integration with Smartsheet.
EDIT: I have done some research on API's and found that it is WAY over my head. I will now respectfully bow out. Best of luck to you.

Paul, thanks for the ideas!

Per Support - can't be done. Sad.
Hello Charles!
Thank you for contacting Smartsheet Support. I understand you are looking for a little information on the ability to embed your API calls into a Smartsheet Form. I'm happy to look into this for you.
Unfortunately, you are not able to embed any custom API calls into a Form. What you are looking for can likely be accomplished via a vlookup formula(https://help.smartsheet.com/function/vlookup) to pull the appropriate supervisor for the target user. However, this is dependent on your sheet configuration.
Thank you for your time, it is greatly appreciated! Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns regarding the above issue. We are more than happy to help! -
