using external data in a form and sheet and for validation

Our company has an internal application. I would like to reference this application's data in a form and in a sheet:

  • When a user is submitting a form, it lets them select a value from a drop down that is populated from data in this external application
  • When a user is submitting a form, it lets them enter free-form text that is cross-referenced/validated against the external data to verify the user entered valid data (an internal ticket ID for example)
  • After a user submits a form and a row is added to a sheet, some columns are auto populated with data that comes from the external data

Is this possible using Smartsheet and if so, how?

    There isn't any way to do that in Smartsheet without using a third-party service or the Smartsheet API.

    When a user is submitting a form, it lets them enter free-form text that is cross-referenced/validated against the external data to verify the user entered valid data (an internal ticket ID for example)

    There isn't a way to validate the information inSmartsheetforms at the moment, but you can validate it after it's submitted or using a third-party service.

    After a user submits a form and a row is added to a sheet, some columns are auto populated with data that comes from the external data

    Ifthe data is importedtoSmartsheet,then it's possible. The Premium add-on DataUploaderis an excellent option to simplify the process.

Right. There are already a number of posts here in the community detailing how to pull a distinct or unique list from another sheet via formula. It usually involves the formula above without the LOWER function. The number 1 would output the first distinct value. Changing that to a 2 will output the second distinct value, so on and so forth.
