Enhancement Request: relative addressing for cell linking in sheets, reports and sights

It would be great to be able to use relative addressing in cell linking between sheets and links in reports and sights instead of the fixed linking as currently implemented in Smartsheet.

Why?

We use Smartsheet for project management and have a set up a standard workspace which contains set of sheets/reports and sights intensely linked to each other. For every new project we make a copy of this template set ("save as new"). The sheets always have the same name and structure.

Now, if we have to change a sheet within this template set and copy it to all existing workspaces we have to go through every (!) sheet, report and sight to correct the links to the new sheet, because all the links currently refer to a specific cell (or range of cells) in a specific sheet.

If we could use relative links in the template workspace, we could just copy the new sheet to every existing workspace and the links still would work.

It would save a lot of time in the administration of the workspaces for all the existing projects...

    Dietrich,

    Nice Idea and I would like that as well. I am currently trying to redesign one of my customers system to see if we an greatly reduce the overhead when we create new systems from the old.

    The problem is that the sheets are unique by thier sheet ID rather than thier name and address(Path), that is why you can have sheets with the same name in the same folder(possibly not recommended).

    Even in Excel and MS project are identified by Name and Address, any links are still absolute by thier original path.

    I smartsheet can find a way to do this it would make both our lives easier.

    Thats it!

    ...and I'm absolutely sure it's not limited to our lives only ;-)

    This might be possible with the API using the celllink object.

    When people start using words like "save a lot of time", that's when the API becomes a viable option to investigate ROI.

    I haven't used the API for cell links, yet.

    To add to this I believe aPaste Special ~ Transpose ~ Cell linkingwould be vert useful, and would save my customers a lot of time ad money. They often have data vertical in Months and want to be able to see it Horizontal in Month but to name one case.

Hi there,

I think this should work:

=IF(COUNTIF(Referencia:Referencia, Referencia@row) > 1, 1)

Have a great day.

@BArmendariz

You will need to write a nested IF function to deal with the levels of hierarchy in your RAG column.

You will have 1 set of IF's to deal with the Child Rows (usually based on Date and % complete etc)

Then another set of IF's to deal with Parent Rows (usually based on if there is a Red ball in the children then the parent is red, if there is a yellow one, then parent is yellow etc)

If the Project level (row1) logic needs to be different then a set of IF's for that will also be required.

For example:

=IF(COUNT(CHILDREN([Task Name]@row)) > 0, IF(COUNTIF(CHILDREN(), "Blue") = COUNT(CHILDREN()), "Blue", IF(COUNTIF(CHILDREN(), "Green") = COUNT(CHILDREN()), "Green", IF(COUNTIF(CHILDREN(), "Red") > 0, "Red", "Yellow"))), IF([% Complete]@row = 1, "Green", IF([End Date]@row < TODAY(), "Red", IF([% Complete]@row = 0, "Blue", "Yellow"))))

The first half of this is dealing with Parent Rows:

=IF(COUNT(CHILDREN([Task Name]@row)) > 0, IF(COUNTIF(CHILDREN(), "Blue") = COUNT(CHILDREN()), "Blue", IF(COUNTIF(CHILDREN(), "Green") = COUNT(CHILDREN()), "Green", IF(COUNTIF(CHILDREN(), "Red") > 0, "Red", "Yellow")))

The opening condition: =IF(COUNT(CHILDREN([Task Name]@row)) > 0, is asking if there are any children (i.e. is this a Parent row) then this particular formula is then saying if it is a parent row then, if all the children are Blue then the Parent is also Blue, if all the children are Green then the Parent is also Green, if ANY of the children are Red then the Parent is also Red, or for anything else the Parent is Yellow.

The second half is child rows:

, IF([% Complete]@row = 1, "Green", IF([End Date]@row < TODAY(), "Red", IF([% Complete]@row = 0, "Blue", "Yellow"))))

If the row is NOT a parent row then if % Complete = 100% then Green, if the row is Overdue then Red, if the % Complete is still 0 then Blue otherwise it is set to Yellow.

I hope this helps...

Kind regards

Hi @sawuzie

There's no direct way to do this. However, you can add a checkbox helper column to identify duplicates. You can use the formula =IF(COUNTIF([Cells Linked from TE Tracker]:[Cells Linked from TE Tracker], [Cells Linked from TE Tracker]@row) > 1, 1, 0). This will add a check in the duplicates column for all values which appear more than once. You can then add the Distinct column with the formula =IF([Duplicate]@row=0, [Cells Linked from TE Tracker]@row). The Distinct column will only have the distinct values listed.

https://community.smartsheet.com/api/v2/discussions?page=2&includeChildCategories=1&type%5B0%5D=Question&excludeHiddenCategories=1&siteSectionID=0&sort=-hot&limit=3&expand%5B0%5D=all&expand%5B1%5D=-body&expand%5B2%5D=insertUser&expand%5B3%5D=lastUser&status=accepted
">
